Detroit Airport

The Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), located 20 miles southwest of downtown Detroit in the suburb of Romulus, is one of America’s most recently renovated and modernised airports. The airport provides flights to and from over 160 worldwide destinations and is a popular travel hub and car rental base for Detroit, Windsor, Ontario and Toledo areas.

The Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport’s recently opened Edward H. McNamara Terminal boasts the world’s second longest airport terminal building, with the mile long Concourse A.

Passengers may travel along Concourse A’s 1.5 miles of moving walkways or climb aboard the ExpressTram, which travels from one end of Concourse A to the other in just over three minutes. The McNamara Terminal also includes two smaller concourses connected to Concourse A by an underground tunnel.

The even newer North Terminal opened on September 17, 2008, and features four long moving walkways, as well as a variety of restaurants such as Hockeytown Café, National Coney Island and Le Petit Bistro. It is home to the first ever Sports Illustrated retail store and USA Today Travel Zone. The José Cuervo Tequilería, a tequila themed bar and restaurant, is one of the McNamara Terminal’s unique dining options.

Free shuttle buses connect all of the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport terminals, which all include ATMs and currency exchanges. The airport also features showers, luggage carts which can be rented at a minimum of $2, disabled facilities, a postbox inside the McNamara Terminal, and an accompanying Westin hotel and conference centre.

The airport is easily accessible via rental car from Interstates 94 and 275. John D. Dingell Drive, an expressway connecting I-94 to Eureka Road, was built in 1999 to provide easy access to the 10 level McNamara Terminal Parking Structure, one of the world’s largest with a capacity of 11,489 vehicles. A garage named the Big Blue Deck handles North Terminal parking and four privately owned parking lots are also located nearby.

The airport is served by five well known American rental car companies, hourly SMART bus routes and private shuttles connecting the airport to the rest of Metro Detroit. Bus service to the nearby Michigan cities of Jackson, East Lansing and Ann Arbor is provided eight times a day and a commuter rail system from Detroit to Ann Arbor is planned for the future.

Cell phone lots for both the McNamara and North Terminals are easy to find and the staff at the help desks scattered throughout the terminals are easily identified by their distinctive green jackets.

The Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport’s reputation has improved dramatically in recent years and was ranked second in customer satisfaction among large American airports by J.D. Power and Associates in 2007. The airport was also named the third best in North America by Airports Council International in 2006.
