Washington DC Downtown

Washington DC Downtown is the tourist-friendly capital of the US and full of interesting sights to enjoy by rental car. The city’s easy to follow roads make Washington DC a popular pick-up point for car rental and a great base from which to explore the state at large.

The city has a lengthy list of landmark buildings and world class museums to discover. Most visitors start their sightseeing at Capitol Hill, the heart of the city and its most famous centerpiece.

Touring the home of Congress is a highlight for many but for excellent views you’ll need to get yourself up Washington Monument, a 166m-tall tower with a viewing deck. The close-by Lincoln Memorial and reflection pool have been the site of many a protest over the years.

Another Washington DC Downtown must-see is the Vietnam Memorial, a somber but moving memento to the 58,000-plus US soldiers that lost their lives in the conflict. Perhaps the best known landmark in the city is the White House, the iconic home of the US president. Limited tours are available.

There are also museums galore in Washington DC Downtown including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Smithsonian Institution and the National Air & Space Museum. You will need at least two or three days to fully explore the city’s museums alone.

There are also many worthwhile daytrips from Washington DC Downtown. Hop in your Washington DC Downtown rental car and drive to nearby Georgetown or take a different route and head for the charming Chesapeake Bay. Arlington, home to the Pentagon and Kennedy’s grave, is also only a short drive away.
