The Johannesburg Airport (also Tambo International Airport, renamed in 2006 for the former president of the African National Congress) is a large airport that lies near the city of Johannesburg in South Africa. It is the primary airport for both international and domestic travel. It is the busiest airport in Africa, and you can find many car rental counters here. More than 19 million passengers pass through annually and the airport also serves as the hub for South African Airways and some other smaller local airlines.
If you have never considered South Africa as a place to take a vacation, think again. Johannesburg is the largest city in terms of size and of population in South Africa. It is home to around four million people. It is also part of the wealthiest province in South Africa. The city is ranked in the top forty largest metropolitan areas in the world. Although quite large and rich, Johannesburg is not one of South Africa’s three capital cities, but it does house the Constitutional Court, the highest court in South Africa.
The location of the city makes for a large source of the gold and diamond trade. The city is located near the Witwatersrand range of hills where the hills are rich with minerals.
Although the city itself is not known as a tourist destination, it is an important stopping point for connecting flights to Cape Town, Kruger National Park, and Durban. Almost all international visitors will pass through Johannesburg at least once on their trip. So to accommodate the number of tourists passing through, there have been a surge of businesses built for the tourists. There are many museums that have recently opened, as well as Gold Reef City, an amusement park located south of the business district. There is also the Johannesburg Zoo, the largest zoo in the country. No matter where you go, you will find something great to see.
