Apparently Emirates has just placed a huge order with Airbus that is worth some $11.5 billion. This order is for 32 A380 Superjumbo aircraft on the opening day of the ILA Berlin Air Show. This new deal, which takes the number of A380 orders by Emirates to 90, shows the airline’s confidence in its future growth, according to the chief executive of the company.
The planes cost more than $300 million each at list price. However, it is thought that Emirates did get a huge discount for buying so many planes in bulk. This announcement does come right after the airline said that it was on track to make more than $1 billion in profits this year.
The carrier, which is based in Dubai, is hoping this week to finalize the sale of its 43.6 percent stake in SriLankan Airlines. This is suppose to generate about $55 million. Emirates has long been expected to top up its already impressive order of airplanes, which stands at more than 150 wide body aircraft worth more than $40 billion.
Tim Clark, the President of Emirates Airline, said that profits will be bigger this year. They are expecting these profits to grow due to the fact that they are ahead of their forecast already.
Profits are currently being driven up by the carrier’s extensive network of more than 100 connections that has enabled it to reach a critical mass of demand even during these troubled times. The airline is focusing on connecting previously unconnected city pairs around the world through just one stop in Dubai for a connecting flight.
