The arctic weather forced hundreds of flights to be canceled and a ton of traffic accidents over the past weekend. In fact, one plane slid off an icy runway, and some powerful winds and heavy snow forced hundreds of flights to be canceled all across Europe.
Over the weekend, an Air Berlin plane actually slid off a runway in Nuremberg, Germany. The plane got stuck in the snow just off the runway but no one was injured. The airport was closed for more than two hours after the event.
On top of this, more than 300 car accidents were reported on icy streets in the southwestern state of Baden Wuerttembergy. Almost 40 people were injured in these car accidents. The western state of North Rhine Westphalia reported about 108 accidents.
Then at the German, French boarder near Freiburg, hundreds of trucks were stuck for hours when French authorities closed the highway because of heavy snow. The Red Cross handed out blankets and hot soup for the drivers stuck on the road.
By early afternoon, about 226 domestic and international flights had been canceled at Frankfurt airport as a low pressure system from the Mediterranean brought gusty winds and several inches of snow. Crews struggled to clear the runways and a few planes managed to take off. However, all of the planes that did take off had to be deiced first.
In Britain, cold winds have swept in from the north, sending the temperature way down to minus 14 degrees Celsius, or 7 degrees Fahrenheit. The country is in the middle of one of the longest cold snaps it’s seen in three decades.
