In a bid to make London the electric car capital of Europe Mayor Boris Johnson has announced that by 2015 ever Londoner will be within one mile of an electric charge point. Speaking at the Copenhagen climate summit to the world’s city leaders he said that he recognized the desperate need to combat climate change by reducing emissions but went on to point out that this did not necessarily mean doing away with all the things that make our lives easier. He said that by introducing electric cars, technology will help tackle one of the biggest problems facing the world today.

Commissioner of Transport for London, Peter Hendy said that the Mayor’s plans meant that there could be an electric revolution in the capital. He pointed out that electric cars produce half the carbon emissions of a diesel vehicle and that they were a lot cheaper to run. By rolling out the electric charge points Londoners will now be able to choose a cheaper, greener alternative to petrol power.

Car manufacturers are already investing vast sums of money into researching, designing and building electric powered vehicles. Over the next few years it is predicted that we will see a range of vehicles coming from the world’s major car manufacturers.

Johnson’s charge point plan intends to see 22,500 electrical points installed in the capital’s work places, 2,000 charge points being installed in car parks and a further 500 being installed on London’s streets. The first phase of electrifying the capital will cost around £60 million.
