Anyone that has fallen in love with meals on British Airways short haul flights is about to be upset. British Airways has just announced that they are axing the free meals on thousands of their short haul flights as part of their way to save money. The company estimates that this could save them about £22 million annually.

The UK flag carrier said that it is stopping free meals and sandwiches after 10am on flights of less than 180 minutes out of Heathrow. Instead of a meal, passengers will be offered a small snack and biscuits. Many similar cutbacks have also been implemented on flights from Gatwick.

Some other cost cuts are also being explored by British Airways, including a review of the range of free alcoholic drinks that are served on short haul flights. The long haul economy passengers will have their free bottles of water replaced with “water cuplets,” while the people in the business class will have their second meal, which is normally served before landing, reduced.

A lot of these same cutbacks were implemented by the British Airways chief executive, Willie Walsh, when he worked at the helm of Aer Lingus. Most of the changes are set to take place next month.

A spokesman for the company said that economy passengers would still get a free breakfast when flying before 10 am. He did go on to say, when people fly with British Airways, their in flight catering will always be top class. He also added, unlike other airlines, it will always be free.
