A new survey that was just released by Deloitte LLP, now shows that forty-five percent of United States consumers will take a vacation or leisure trip between Thanksgiving and March that will involve paying for overnight accommodations.
About eighteen percent of those surveyed said that they would take a trip during Thanksgiving week and weekend. Twenty two percent of the people surveyed said that they would travel at some point during December through New Years day.
However, the bad news is that larger numbers of people said that they would travel less and spend less compared to a year ago. Thirty-five percent of people say that they will spend less this year on leisure travel, and 37 percent said that the expect to spend about the same. Only 27 percent of people said that they plan on spending more. The people that will be spending less did tend to be younger with lower incomes and children in the household.
Another 28 percent of people said that they plan on taking fewer trips this year than what they took last year during Thanksgiving and March. Twenty-five percent of the people surveyed said that they would take more trips and 45 percent of people said that they would take about the same amount.
The survey itself was commissioned by Deloitte and was done by way of telephone interviews by Opinion Research Corporation between October 22 and November 2. Almost 2,000 people took part in the survey. Although it does appear that people will be traveling this year, the numbers are still a far cry away from what the travel industry would like to see.
