Delta Air Lines has begun to align the fees and policies for their customers who are traveling on operated flights by Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines while the carrier works to make sure that the passengers receive a consistent experience during the integration process of the two airlines. Not long after Delta Air Lines took over Northwest Airlines, Ed Bastian, the Chief Financial Officer of the carrier, was in town wearing a polar bear tie with a smile to reassure passengers that there wouldn’t be too much change.

It is the plan of Delta Air Lines to keep all of the hubs, frequent flier miles, and all flights with maybe less seating. Bastian and the airline’s other executives definitely have their plate full now. Last Thursday, Bastian said that the transition will probably take about two years before being able to operate as only one airline.

One of the changes that will occur to align the fees and policies of both airlines is eliminating the award ticket fuel surcharges of WorldPerks and SkyMiles. They are also going to reduce the charges of Reservation Sales Direct Ticketing, eliminate the administrative fees on curbside check-in, align the fees of first and second checked bags, and add Coach Choice Seats to Delta Air Lines flights.

Steve Gorman, the Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of Delta Air Lines, said that the rise in the number of bags that are carried onto their planes during the year tells them that their passengers aren’t differentiating them as the only main carrier that is not charging for the first checked bag. As they align the fees and policies to simplify the traveling experience during the merger, he continued, Delta Air Lines is adopting practices that have been proven and accepted on the market.
