Among many of the major United States based carriers, Delta Air Lines, in light of the swine flu, has now cut capacity to Mexico until further notice.

This Atlanta based carrier said that it was only reducing its capacity to match the demand, which has fallen dramatically since the outbreak of the swine flu. To do this, Delta Air Lines will be reducing the size of the planes that will be flying into 11 different Mexican cities. Delta Air Lines and its Northwest Airlines subsidiary use to operate about 350 flights per week to just Mexico alone.

AirTran, another US based airline has also said that it would be cutting flights to Cancun. Mexico. Once again this company said that it will be cutting flights simply to match the demand. However, AirTran says that their cuts are based on demand patterns that took place before the swine flu scare.

Other carriers like Continental Airlines say that they will cut the number of their seats available for sale to Mexico in half. Likewise, United Airlines says that they too will be reducing the number of seats to Mexico by almost 60%.

The U.S. Carriers were angered last Thursday by the advice from Vice President Joseph Biden to avoid air travel and other forms of mass transit to Mexico to avoid the swine flu. The Air Transport Association CEO James May said that Biden’s assertion was very disappointing. He went on to say that United States airlines have been working around the clock with all government agencies, and none of them have suggested for people to avoid air travel, unless they are not feeling well.
