Reports now show that a portion of the terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Airport had to be evacuated Monday after a man without a boarding pass walked through a passenger screening checkpoint. Apparently the man refused to obey security officers.
The man failed to be stop around 7:45am at the McNamara Terminal. The Transportation Security Administration said that the man was subdued by airport police after a stun gun failed to stop him.
FBI agent Michael Thomas, in a criminal complaint filed with the United States District Court in Detroit, said that the man, who was later identified as Kaylan L. Policherla, walked through the checkpoint and a metal detector with his hands in his jacket pockets. Transportation Security Administration workers activated an alarm and security doors were lowered at that portion of the terminal between the security checkpoint and terminal concourse. The people were evacuated from the area.
A Transportation Security Administration screener followed Policherla until airport police arrived and ordered him to stop. An officer discharged a Taser at Policherla but it had no effect. Officers then wrestled him to the floor and handcuffed him.
Dogs were used to search that portion of the terminal that had been evacuated for bombs. After the search was over, the police confirmed that nothing was found. It is still unclear why the man was at the airport. However, his car was illegally parked outside.
The FBI is still looking into the security breach, but at this time no further details could be released. This event follows very closely to the attempt of a Nigerian man who tried to ignite a bomb on a flight to Detroit from Amsterdam.
