Apparently, Southwest Airlines found themselves in the spotlight again. However, this time they were in it for the wrong reason. The airline just recently put an 8-year-old boy at risk when they rejected his safety seat. The problem was this young boy suffers from a very terminal disease that gets worse every day, and this safety seat helps with his condition.
The boy’s family were on their way home from Disney World at the time of the incident. They just wanted to enjoy the last few months their boy Nicholas has left to live. However, once they got on the plane, the Southwest flight attendant forced the boy to sit in a normal seat. This is hard for him, because of his disease.
This boy has been diagnosed with Batten disease. This is a very rare and very fatal neurological degenerative disorder. It is a disease that starts in childhood and can be present at birth. The disease starts to get worse for kids between the ages of 8 and 12. Typically, it results in frequent seizures and vision problems. Soon, the victims lose their ability to sit up and walk by themselves. This was already hard enough for the family to deal with. This summer he had to use a wheelchair to get around, but just a few months before that he was able to walk.
A spokesperson for the airline said that the final decision on a plane is made by the captain. However, the airline is in the middle of trying to gather some new information about what happened on this flight. In the end, it is always the captain’s call.
