As gas prices drop and many major airlines cut the amount of flights they offer over the Thanksgiving period. Doesn’t driving seem the sensible option during the holidays?
Richard White of The Car Care Council stated that “Driving is simply more convenient and less hectic than flying.” He also mentioned that the improved gas prices may also sway a lot of people, especially as it costs the same amount for a family of four to drive, as it does for one person to fly.
Those who chose to drive this Thanksgiving will not only save money, but they will also enjoy the fact that they can;
Set out from wherever they want to, at whatever time they want to,
Not have to wait in long queues at the airport,
And take as much luggage as they want, including pets.
Despite this news, airlines are still hiring new staff to deal with the Thanksgiving holiday rush. Mary Peters (US Transportation Secretary) spoke with representatives from major airlines and airports to resolve these issues. The overall outcome of these meetings was that, the industry is set to hire seasonal employees to improve waiting times at check-in-kiosks and gates.
David Castelveter of the Airport Transport Association had this to say “The airlines detailed aggressive plans to ensure they have sufficient staff and resources on hand to cope with the upcoming holiday travel season.”
So with reduced flights available and cheaper gas available, travelling by car does appear to be the cheaper option this Thanksgiving.
