The numbers of passengers traveling at the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport declined more than 9 percent in June. Previous numbers showed the average passengers for the same month last year were at 129,183, but this year had declined to 117,632. But the low numbers were not the only decline. The amount of cargo passing through the airport has also declined. The total amount of air cargo fell almost 25 percent from 2,150 to 1,618 in the previous year.
As airlines have been forced to cut flights, smaller airports such as Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, have suffered losing much of their customer traffic to larger airports in the vicinity. It is thought that Greenville-Spartanburg airport has lost as much as 50 percent of its traffic to larger airports in the region such as Atlanta and Charlotte. This move has pushed Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport off the US Department of Transportation’s list of 100 largest domestic airports. The list ranks the travel volume of over 400 airports across the country. The Greenville-Spartanburg Airport had hovered in the high 90’s before crossing the threshold past 100.
