It looks like road travel will be up and air travel down for people in Michigan travelling home for the Thanksgiving holidays this year. Travel vice president for the Auto Club Group, Claire Lockley said that even though people are still trying to get back on their feet after the economic slowdown the wish to be with family and friends during the holidays will mean that both the roads and the airports will be very busy this year. The AAA says that by its reckoning the number of people travelling over the holidays will be up on last years figure by 1.4% to 38.4 million. 1.2 million of these people will be from Michigan. 87% of those travelling are expected to go by car as the number of people who choose to fly continues to decrease.
The AAA says that the price of travelling this year will be cheaper than it was the same time last year. According to their Leisure Travel Index airfares will be down by 4%, the average spend on a car rental will be down by 3% and hotel prices will be down by over 10%.
The AAA has issued its usual warnings to people about not drinking and driving and not driving when tired as well as getting to airports in good time. It has also warned that the holiday period coincides with the deer hunting season. Last year there were 61,010 deer related road accidents in Michigan which resulted in twelve people losing their lives.
