Apparently Japan Airlines has announced that it will extend the period of round trip flight frequency reduction on routes from Osaka and Nagoya to Bangkok. According to reports, this reduction in flight frequency will now continue until July 15, 2010.
The anti-government demonstrations that took part in Bangkok in April of this year have led to a very sharp decline in passenger bookings to this South Eastern Asian city. Thus, this news from Japan Airlines continues to spell bad news for Bangkok.
In a very swift response to the dip in traffic figures, Japan Airlines has temporarily reduced the number of weekly flights on these routes for the month of June. Since airlines are doing what they can to save money, it stands to reason that airlines would cut routes that are seeing a big dip in passenger numbers, like the dip that is going on in the number of passengers traveling to Bangkok.
Since leisure passenger demand has been very slow to recover due to concerns about the stability of the situation, Japan Airlines will keep the number of flights that have been reduced until July 15. The airline does anticipate recovery in demand during the upcoming summer holiday season. Due to that, the airline does plan to reinstate the once daily flights from Osaka and Nagoya to Bangkok as of July 16.
Japan Airlines did understand that this could cause inconveniences to some travelers. However, experts are quick to point out that the move by Japan Airlines is the right one for the carrier to make. Due to all the financial problems the carrier has been having, it should work to limit routes that are proving to be unpopular.
