JetBlue has just recently fixed a technical issue with their central computer system. This is the same problem that actually led to the temporary grounding of flights nationwide last Friday. Flights were held from around 2:45pm EST until the issue was resolved just before 3:45pm EST.
The carrier, however, had already canceled most of its flights out of the New York area Friday due to the big snowstorm. Nearly all major carriers flying in and out of New York dropped at least some of their flights. Overall, there were around 2,000 cancellations. However, this has become normal this year due to all of the big snowstorms.
The snow and ice at John F. Kennedy International Airport, which is JetBlue’s home base, kept incoming flights delayed for an average of one hour and 9 minutes, according to a spokesman from the FAA. At Newark Liberty International, incoming flights were delayed an average of one hour and 17 minutes. The high winds in Boston and Washington also slowed air traffic.
Overall, there are a ton of different things that are causing cancellations this year. Although the weather seems to be causing most of them, this little mix up with the central computer systems at JetBlue reminds people that other problems can effect cancellations as well.
Experts are saying that due to the weather that has been experienced so far this year and what is likely to happen towards the end of the year, could make this one of the worst years in canceled flights. This news follows a very disappointing year for the airline industry. Cancellations are the last thing that airlines want.
