New reports now show that a Jewish teen on an airplane caused a big misunderstanding with one of his prayer objects. This led to the captain diverting the Kentucky-bound plane to Philadelphia and a visit from the bomb squad.
The boy, who was only 17 years old, was on a US Airways Express flight traveling from New York to Louisville. On the flight he was using a tefillin, which is a set of black boxes attached to leather straps and containing biblical passages. When the box is used in prayer, one box is strapped to the arm while the other box is placed on the head.
An FBI spokesperson, J.J Klaver, said that this prayer item is not something that the average person sees very often. Thus, it is very easy to see why this little item caused such a scare.
The teen did go on to explain the ritual after being question by crew members, but the captain decided to land in Philadelphia anyway. The flight left LaGuardia Airport in New York around 7:30 am. It landed without incident in Philadelphia about 90 minutes later and was met by police and officials from the FBI and the Transportation Security Administration.
Authorities went on to say that the plane was searched and passengers were questioned. The teen, who is from White Plains, New York, was traveling with his 16-year-old sister and was very cooperative. Authorities went on to say that the kids were much more alarmed and scared than anyone else was. During this time the teen and his sister were never in custody, and they were cleared to continue their flight.
