Apparently just last month, a child was directing pilots from the air traffic control center at John F. Kennedy Airport, which just so happens to be one of the busiest airports in the world. This news came to light after officials listened to audio clips of the boy directing traffic. Now the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the event.
The Federal Aviation Administration said that, pending the outcome of the investigation, the employees involved in the incident are not controlling air traffic. This kind of behavior is not acceptable and does not demonstrate the kind of professionalism that is expected from all Federal Aviation Administration employees. The agency declined to comment anymore beyond this statement.
The child in question can be heard on tapes making five transmissions to pilots preparing to takeoff. During one of the exchanges the child says, JetBlue 171 contact departure. The pilot responds, Over to departure JetBlue 171, awesome job.
The kid does appear to be under some kind of adult supervision, because a male voice does come on and says, with a laugh, that is what people get when kids are out of school. In another exchange, the youngster clears another plane for takeoff by saying, adios, amigo.
Jim Peters from the Federal Aviation Administration said that the control tower is a highly secure area for traffic controllers. Children of the tower’s employees are allowed to visit, but need to get approval from the Federal Aviation Administration first.
Some people have stated that they do not think that it was a big deal. Mostly due to the fact that the kid was not up their directing traffic by himself, but he was with a qualified air traffic controller. One lady said, as a parent, she can understand what it’s like when kids are out of school. Sometimes kids have to be taken into work, and it’s hard to make it fun for them.
