A large luxury cruise liner, which was carrying nearly 1,500 passengers, slammed into a pier as it docked Friday at an Egyptian Red Sea resort in fierce winds. As a result of the crash, three crew members died.

The owner of the ship, Costa Cruises, said that the vessel sprung a leak on the right side after banging into the dock around 4:45am. The company went on to say that they sadly have confirmed the death of three crew members. The ship is now safely docked in port.

Other passengers are being put up in hotels, and arrangements are being made to return them to their home countries. Witnesses said fierce winds had rocked the area overnight, and the ship was slammed part way onto the pier.

Right now the bad weather is what people believe to have cause the crash. The impact left a 2 meter hole in the side of the boat. The ship had been on a 18-day cruise from Dubai to Savona and had 1,437 guests on board. Police and rescue officials said that the three killed included an Indian, Brazilian and a Honduran. However, the company has not confirmed these nationalities as of yet.

The ship weighs 55,000 tons and was built back in 1986. It was restored and entered into service with Costa Cruises in 2002. This is just one of 16 ships that belongs to cruise line.

Some experts find it hard to believe that the winds could have caused this crash. However, others say that the fierce winds could have been strong enough to move the big boat while it was in the water. An official report should be given out in coming weeks.
