Apparently a New York-bound plane had to make its way back to Boston’s Logan International Airport after a pilot smelled smoke in the cockpit minutes after takeoff. Reports show that the plane was able to safely make its way back to the airport. An airport spokesman, Matthew Brelis, said that flight 1379 landed safely Saturday and returned to the gate under is own power. The plane was part of the Delta Airlines fleet.

A spokesman for Delta Airlines, Carlos Santos, said that the airline was currently investigating the cause of the smoke smell that the pilot smelled last Saturday. During the meantime, the spokesman said that the plane’s passengers were re-booked on another afternoon flight.

Matthew Brelis said that Flight 1379 took off for LaGuaradia Airport in New York around 10:45 am. At the time, the plane was carrying 34 people, which did include the crew members. The pilot turned back only after about eight minutes into the flight. When the plane made its way back to Boston, the area was being hit by a moderate snowstorm.

Aviation experts are not shocked that the pilot chose to turn back around. Lately, due to weather conditions, mishaps and terrorist threats, airlines have been on high alert to keep people safe. Although the airline, nor the pilot, is sure what the smoke smell was or where it was coming from, the pilot did the right thing by turning back.

It is not yet known if the airplane would have made it to New York or not. Investigators will not know until they can determine what caused the smoke smell in the first place.
