Apparently a chunk of ice, which is the size of about four football fields, has broken off from the Hualcan glacier and fell into Andean lake. This breakup has resulted in at least one death so far.

According to reports, the massive ice block broke from a glacier and landed in the lake. When this happened, it unleashed a 23 meter tsunami. This sent muddy water through nearby towns, and killed at least one person.

This big chunk of ice detached from the Hualcan glacier near Carbuaz, which is about 200 miles north of the capital, Lima. Reports from this area said that the event happened last Sunday. The ice fell off and landed into a lagoon known as lake 513. Of course, when this huge chunk of ice fell into the water it did create a wave of water that was about 75 feet high. Authorities say that it has caused damaged to Carbuaz and other villages around the area.

The Indeci Civil Defense institute said that 50 homes and a water processing plant serving 60,000 residents were wrecked. There was a trout fisherman who was initially presumed dead, but he did manage to survive. This leaves only one confirmed death.

Authorities have started to evacuate mountain valley settlements, because they fear that the ice block, measuring at 500 meters by 200 meters, could be followed by more ruptures as the glacier melts. The governor of the Ancash region, Cesar Alvarez, blamed climate change for this mishap. He said that because of global warming the glaciers are going to detach and fall on those overflowing lakes.
