In a bid to cope with demand from travelers an extra train has been put into service for those wishing to take a ride into Tibet.
Qinghai-Tibet Railway Company representative, Li Shunping said, “The temporary train can accommodate nearly 800 people each day.” This should help ease problems during the peak months.
High demand means that the train company has also had to update its system of ticket distribution. Because of short supply, many travelers are finding it necessary to queue for tickets two days before they mean to travel.
Xihai International Travel Agency’s Zhong Sichun said: “There are no tour groups traveling to Tibet from the end of June to mid-July, because we cannot guarantee that we can get train tickets.” A number of companies are abandoning the journey from their travel itineraries as they are finding it impractical.
The new train joins the five trains already making the daily journey to Tibet from Xining, Qinghai Province.
Another measure introduced by the company to help cope with the amount of travelers heading into Tibet was to divide the route into two stages. Only two trains are fitted with the oxygen apparatus needed to make travel comfortable across the plateau. Passengers will therefore transfer to the high altitude train at Golmud, Qinghai Provice. It is a slightly unusual system because one train pulls up next to the other and passenger transfer is made door to door.
