It now seems that the United States has placed a travel warning on Bali, which is a very popular tourist destination. This popular getaway spot, which is home to some 3 million people, has just had a recent rabies epidemic. So far there have been 78 reported deaths over the past two years, but many cases go unreported so the number could be higher.
In just the first half of this year alone, 30,000 dog bites have been reported. Nyoman Sutedja, who is the chief of Bali’s provincial health ministry, said that they have a serious problem with the anti-rabies vaccine for humans. The problem is that they are very short on this treatment across the island. The island needs help, and they need it now.
Right now the United States and Australia have already issued some travel warnings for their citizens that are traveling to the area. Several tourists have been bitten by dogs while there. So far no tourists have died due to the dog bites.
Anyone that has traveled to Bali knows that dogs run rampant there. They are a common sight on the beaches, in the markets and even in garbage heaps. They are generally tolerated by the locals. However, dogs can carry diseases and people are learning that now.
In Bali, it is very hard to convince people that dogs can carry diseases. The people in Bali believe that dogs will take them to heaven when they die. Thus, people do not think ill of them. However, people from other countries know that dogs can carry diseases, like rabies. This is a disease that can be passed on to humans.
