In a bid to secure the win to host the 2016 Olympics, Rio de Janeiro officials have now announced that an additional 2,000 hotel rooms will be built in time for the games, should the city win the bid. This big announcement comes just before a vote that will decide where the games will be held. It seems that the International Olympic Committee’s key concern over Rio de Janeiro hosting the Olympic games was the lack of hotel rooms. It now appears as if this problem could be fixed now.

The International Olympic Committee said, in a report earlier this month, that Rio de Janeiro has an insufficient amount of hotel rooms to host the Olympic games. They went on to say that their plans to use four villages and six cruise ships to make room for everyone would require particular attention in both planning and delivery.

Rio de Janeiro then went on to revise its accommodations plans to guarantee that more than 48,000 rooms would be available, which does surpass the International Olympic Committee’s requirement of at least 40,000 rooms. This would mean that the city would meet the target of 13,000 hotel rooms and 25,000 rooms will be added to newly built villages. Another 8,500 rooms would become available due to cruise ships and 1,700 rooms will be available by way of apartment hotels.

Right now many cities around the world are doing what they can to try and win over the International Olympic Committee in order to host the Olympic games in 2016. Cities view this as a great way to boost tourism. Although these games will not be held for many years, these cities could uses this honor to start boosting tourism right away.
