A Royal Caribbean executive said that he is very proud of what the company’s ships and people are doing for Haiti. This statement comes after the cruise line has been under fire after returning to the devastated Caribbean nation.
The president and CEO of Royal Caribbean, Adam Goldstein, said that the port visits by the Independence of the Seas are making valuable contributions to the relief efforts by offloading goods and supplies in Labadee. Royal Caribbean Cruises decided to continue to stop off with travelers at its private beach on the north coast at Labadee.
Other executives in the cruise industry defended Royal Caribbean’s actions as well. The president and CEO of MSC Cruises, Rick Sasso, said that Royal Caribbean did not have to go back to Labadee this week, this month or even this year. He noted that anyone that criticizes the cruise line for doing this makes him sick. Rick went on to say that the cruise line is exposing themselves to that kind of criticism, and they will take it. However, what they are doing is correct, and they will find ways to get their aid down there at the request of the Haitian government.
Royal Caribbean was the first cruise line to return to Haiti just three days after the 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the capital Port au Prince. Three more ships are scheduled to stop at Labadee this week alone. Critics have accused the company of being insensitive to the suffering and humanitarian disaster just 80 miles away, where almost 200,000 people died, while others are quick to point out that the north parts of Haiti are going to bear a good part of the burden of what happened in the south. The more economic support that the north can get, the better.
