Police detectives in Kenya are investigating the disappearance of more than Sh70 million which was making its way from the capital Nairobi to the U.K. The money was being transported by G4S but when the consignment of money arrived in the U.K. it was found to have been tampered with and only part of the originally intended amount of foreign currency turned up. It is suspected that the money was stolen whilst still in Nairobi. However Kenyan detectives are looking into all possibilities including tampering at the airport or even whilst the consignment was on board the G4S International contracted aircraft.
Police investigations are being hampered by the fact that a number of security cameras which would have produced valuable information about what happened to the consignment once it had moved airside were switched off.
Officials say that the only people to have known that the consignment was valuable after G4S staff were the aircraft’s crew and some of the cargo clearance staff. Dan Okoth, communications manager at G4S has been keen to point out that the money that disappeared was no longer under G4S control and was stolen from the client’s vault. He also said that the firm had found out that one of the boxes containing the money had been tampered with as it did not have its original seal and that it was not locking properly.
The incident is an embarrassing one for G4S whose staff along with police officers were arrested only a week ago for stealing Sh22 million in transit from a bank.
