Some very frustrated passengers have been looking for other travel arrangements after hearing that Spirit Airlines has been forced to cancel all of its flights till Tuesday. This move was caused by the pilot strike.

The discount carrier said on its website on Sunday that all of its flights have been canceled through June 15th. Pilots walked off the job on Saturday due to ongoing contract disputes with the airline. These disputes have been going on for over three years now. Spirit Airlines pilots have said that their pay lags behind competitors such as JetBlue and AirTran Airways.

Paul Hopkins, the strike committee chairman of Spirit Airlines unit of the Air Line Pilots Association, said that none of the planes are moving, and none of the pilots are crossing the picket line. This despute has gone on long enough.

The airline carries some 16,680 passengers per day. This is about 1 percent of the United States total. Most of the passengers the airline carries are traveling between the eastern United States and the Caribbean. Spirit Airlines’ CEO said this past weekend that no talks were scheduled with picketing pilots.

This shutdown continues to cause a lot of major problems for all passengers who use Spirit Airlines. The carrier said it is refunding fares for flights that fall between last Saturday and this coming Tuesday. They are also offering a $100 credit towards future flights. This is all in a desperate attempt to get passengers to book with the airline again after the strike.

However, the people who had to replace their Spirit Airlines ticket with another airline found out that a lot of the same day fares were almost two to three times as much as what they would have been paying with Spirit Airlines. So even with the refund, and the promise of $100 credit, many passengers still found themselves in the hole a lot of money.
