If there is one idea that Spirit Airlines wants to drill into the head of the public, it’s the fact that they will continue to fly their passengers even if there is a pilot strike. Spirit Airlines says it plans to work with other airlines to keep flying if its pilots choose to walk off the job.
Misty Pinson, a spokesperson for Spirit Airlines, said that the carrier is currently partnering with other airlines to provide continued service to customers in the event of a strike. However, Pinson did not go onto say which airlines Spirit Airlines would work with. She also did not offer any kind of details about whether the carrier planned to fly a full or partial schedule in the event of a strike.
Experts say that this statement from Spirit Airlines comes as the carrier is currently locked in last-minute talks this week with pilot representatives in Washington D.C. While it seems that there is some kind of progress being made, it is still unclear if a strike can be averted or not.
Other media sources said that contract negotiations have been ongoing for more than three years. Thus, things are finally reaching some kind of boiling point. Spirit Airlines pilots, on average, makes less than pilots who work for other low-cost carriers. The company has said that it has offered the pilots double digit percentage salary boosts. However, as of now, it does not seem to be enough to put an end to the upcoming strike. Right now the strike is planned for June 12th if an agreement cannot be reached.
