Due to the swine flu, many people are thinking about changing the plans that they had to travel to Mexico. Thus, most people think that they can cancel their trip to Mexico, because they have travel insurance. However, some people are finding out that this is may not be the case.

The problem that people are finding out is that, although the threat level of the swine flu has been risen to level five, the World Health Organization has not officially called for the restriction of regular travel.

So people want to know if their travel insurance will cover the cost of changing their plans or canceling the trip. The short answer is yes, if the person has the swine flu, and no if the person does not.

The only loophole for people who do not have the swine flu to get their travel insurance to cover the cost of canceling the trip is if they have purchased an upgrade insurance plan that is commonly called “cancel for any reason.” In order for this to work, the trip must be canceled within 48 hours of departure, and the policy must be purchased at least 14 days before the deposit for the trip was given. However, even then there are some exclusions that could still cause travel insurance companies not to pay for cancellation fees.

The U.S Travel Insurance Association says that the most important thing to remember is that travel coverage varies very widely by company. So before people assume that their insurance does or does not cover this situation, it is best to check with the travel insurance company that they belong to. Most people are finding out that their travel protection will cover people who get or have the swine flu while on their trip. At the same time, most travel insurance companies do not cover the fear of getting the swine flu.
