According to a government report that was just recently released, the Transportation Security Administration is still failing to ensure the security of boxed cargo in passenger planes. This is leaving them open to terrorist attacks.

The report by the Homeland Security Department says that air cargo is still vulnerable and could allow terrorists to sneak a bomb into any one of tens of thousands cargo packages carried each and every day. Here the bomb would rest in the belly of a plane.

Overall, the report shows that investigators were able to slip into a supposedly secure warehouse where cargo was stored before being loaded up on airplanes. It was here that the investigators walked around unchallenged. Inspector General Richard Skinner was also able to find out that some workers who handle cargo had not received required background checks or training.

Skinners report says that the Transportation Security Administration has not been effective in securing cargo. In response to this report, The Transportation Security Administrator, Gale Rossides, said that agency leaders are in agreement. The problems need to be addressed right away. He pointed out that the six recommendations from the report will provide additional benefits to security.

Others say that the report does raise very good concerns about security on planes. Airlines are handling tons of cargo every single day and it needs to be protected. It does no good to have security checks for every bag just to have it broken into just before being loaded on a plane. Cargo needs to remain checked and accounted for all of the times, not just some of the time.
