The cabin crew at British Airways has finally come forward and announced that they are going to strike later this month. This strike is suppose to give the cabin crew some more bargaining power with the carrier.
According to reports, the Unite union has confirmed that the cabin crew that they represent from British Airways will be striking for three days from March 20th. The cabin crew well then strike again for four days from March 27th. The good news for travelers is that the union has previously stated that there would be no industrial action over Easter.
Of course, the bad news does not stop there for British Airways and its consumers. Apparently the union also said that their would be further action after April 14th if a resolution is still not yet agreed upon, showing that the union is not prepared to give up the fight if these two strike dates do not do the trick.
The Unite union took this decision to strike following a ballot that took place in late February. This ballot showed that 81 percent of British Airways’ cabin crew voted in favor of industrial action. Another ballot will now be held, however, due to the fact that British Airways has offered a new deal.
However, travelers should not hold their breath that this new deal with stop the strike. The union is not recommending that its members take this new deal. Either way, if the deal is accepted, then the strike will be called off.
The union did acknowledge that there was a need for change at British Airways. They did this by offering up their own cost cutting package, which included things like pay cuts and full time members moving down to part time. However, British Airways went on to reject this proposal.
