Although the airline industry is having its fair share of ups and downs, United States airlines are finally starting to post great on-time performance ratings. Among the most well known United States carriers, Unite has posted the best record.

The United States Transportation Department said last Tuesday that the airlines averaged 78.7 percent on-time arrival rate in January of this year. Thus, it seems that United States airlines continue to improve over its performance that it gave last year.

Although United Airlines was one of the most well known airlines that posted great on-time ratings, it was Hawaiian Airlines, which is isolated from all sorts of bad weather that has been plaguing mainland airlines, that held its usual spot at the top. United was able to post an on-time record of 84.4 percent.

The worst on-time arrival rate went to regional carriers American Eagle, Comair and Pinnacle. All of these were barely able to post above 70 percent. The Transportation Department said that only two flights were stuck on the tarmac for four hours or more in January. Both of them were Delta Air Lines planes.

New rules that are set to come into effect next month could subject airlines to fines of up to $27,500 per passenger for delaying a flight for more than three hours without giving passengers a chance to get off the plane. Thus, passengers are much more likely to start seeing canceled flights instead of delayed flights. This is because it’s better for the airline to refund all the passengers than it is to pay the incredibly high fine.
