It now seems that the United States’ State Department is asking all Americans traveling to India or living there to stay alert and use caution during the 2010 Commonwealth Games that will be taking place in Delhi on October 3 through the 14. This alert was issued Wednesday by the United States Mission in India. It notes that it has no specific threat of attack from any individual group.

However, they did go on to cite that an August 12 Worldwide Caution suggested that al-Qaeda and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks against United States interests. The alert said that, in the event that the United States government receives information about any kind of treat, the State Department would provide information on that threat right away to the public.

The alert now urges all Americans in or going to India to enroll with the United States Mission to receive alerts as quickly as possible if a threat is made. The alert said that Indian authorities will be responsible for Commonwealth Games’ security arrangements.

There will be some increased security at the Commonwealth Games. However, despite this increased security, the Mission advised Americans to be on their guard against petty crimes as well. This includes things like pickpockets and theft of personal property on trains and or buses. People should also be on their guard at all major airports and train stations, as well as popular restaurants.

According to the State Department, this travel alert expires on November 15. Until then, everyone needs to use their best judgment when visiting India. Remember it is always best to travel in groups when visiting overseas.
