Great news for people who fly in and out of Canada a lot. Apparently, the rules that do not allow wi-fi to be on Canadian airlines is under review. If this ruling gets over turned, then people will no longer be limited to entertainment that they bring with them. After all, so many other airlines are offering wi-fi, it only seems fair that Canada gets to join the race as well.
As of right now, Transport Canada is allowing Air Canada to run a few test flights using wi-fi. This will be done on two of its planes. They are going to be operated between Toronto or Montreal to Los Angeles. Of course, these two planes can also be used on other long-haul flights to the United States.
In a statement that just recently came out, Transport Canada said that this airline is required to put safety measures into place while running these trials. The airline has to provide crew members with training for emergency and safety producers. They have to ensure that there is no kind of interference from this wi-fi with other equipment on the planes.
On top of this, Air Canada flight attendants can tell consumers to turn off their electronic devices at any time during the flight for passenger briefings. If a device is suspected to be causing any interference, the carrier has to prohibit the use of that device immediately and submit a report to the regulator. The impact is more difficult to assess since different devices could use different frequencies. So far, Transport Canada has not set a timeline for how long it will run this trial.
